As a child I loved nothing more than a horse adventure story. Lauren St John is one of our favourite children’s authors and she also holds a huge fondness for horses and the stories she read as a child about them. I galloped through the pages of her latest book ‘Finding Wonder’. Which is not only a brilliant adventure story but also a marvellous mystery, with some cracking characters, both human and equine. Roo and her colourful Aunt Joni make wonderful detectives and you find yourself rooting for them and the animals they are trying to save, as they travel across the country, over moors and mountains and even further afield to a Scottish castle. All in their camper van named Bluebird. A must read for lovers of adventure, mystery and of course, horses !Lauren St John 🐎💫📚 ... See MoreSee Less

Did you ever come across the Linda Craig Mysteries? I read them in the 1980s and no one else remembers them - like Nancy Drew but with her Palomino pony

Absolutely & Forever by Rose Tremain 💕
I absolutely adored this book. It’s main character Marianne, will make you want to laugh and cry. A story of family, friendship, first love and tragedy you will not forget. From a quaint upbringing in Berkshire, boarding school, friends with absurd double barrelled names, horses and holidays in Cornwall, to Chelsea in the swinging 60s and eventually life as, “just a wife”. Marianne’s journey is not remarkable but her mind and musings most certainly are. One of my favourite characters of late, a bit like the ever awkward Elinor Oliphant. Petronella, her best friend, a strong and opinionated Scot, is also seriously entertaining. A must read. A quick read, that will leave you wanting to read everything Rose Tremain has ever written. @rose.tremain #brilliantbooks #mustread #absolutelyandforever #firstlove #lovestory #laughoutloud #booksbooksbooks ... October has been a really, really great month for the bookshop. First the Guardian, then we were in a wonderful article in Country Life, today a fab mention in the TIMES!
This month of hibernating and reflecting, reading, autumnal bracing walks and starting to get the bookshop ready for Christmas, has been quiet but lovely. I’ve taken some time to think how lucky I am. I own a bookshop. It was a real struggle at the beginning but it’s an amazing thing and so is how much people appreciate and enjoy it. 12 years on and it’s better than ever. Thriving in fact. Bring on the Christmas fun.✨ #bookshop #independentbookshop #smallbusiness #shoplocal #cirencestershopping #cirencesterlife #cirencesterrocks #booksbooksbooks #booksaremagical ... See MoreSee Less

Octavia I cannot believe that that is twelve years. That is AMAZING! It feels like yesterday that you opened! I’m so pleased that you’re such a success- you deserve every second of it. X
Well done Octavia's Bookshop !🥂💕x
Well it's fabulous isn't it. Octavia's Bookshop Octavia's bookshop is a truly, magical place When over the threshold, you enter, the space For there are so many worlds, to explore Exciting adventures, when you step through the door Castles and dragons, forests, strange trees Winter and summer, pirates, on the seas A whole world begins, with each page, you turn Or information, you can seek out to learn The seats are waiting, books on display Not only that, a purchase, you take that world away Independant, not part of a chain Long may this special bookshop, always remain. Another book I recently read but will never forget is The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah. So many people have recommended this to me and finally, with a French road trip ahead of me, I decided this would be one of the books to travel with.
Here we follow the extraordinary life of the Nightingale and her sister. How their lives were torn apart by the Second World War and how it affected the French and the role women played in the war at large. Both Vianne and Isabelle save many lives, in entirely different ways and with contrasting means and beliefs. Both utterly selfless, with an incredible will and strength to survive. It took me on journey from a bookshop in Paris, to rural Northern France, over the Pyrenees to San Sebastián and the safety of Spain. We too travelled there as I read. The descriptions of San Sebastián, were exactly what I saw before me. Golden elegant medieval and basque style buildings, the beautiful curve of the Concha beach. A refuge then and a much loved beach resort now. This book is well written and heart wrenching but also has an ending that leaves you not unhappy but fulfilled. I like closure after such an emotional journey.#brilliantbooks #beautifullywritten #unforgettable #unforgettablebooks #reallygoodreads @kristinhannahauthor ... See MoreSee Less

I have just finished reading Impossible Creatures by @katherine.rundell and WOW! What an epic, magical experience this book was. The descriptions of the beasts, people and place are extraordinarily good. Some life affirming lines and some side splitting humour, along with the magnitude of the quest Mal and Christopher are on, makes for an emotional yet entertaining and totally tense, page-turning adventure. For it is they that must save the Archipelago and all the weird and wonderful creatures that rely on it’s magic to survive. I devoured this book as Gelifen the Griffin, would devour his daily dose of fish, or indeed cake. Katherine Rundell is the first we can actually, really say, has done what Rowling did and echoes what Diana Wynne Jones did before her…she has created an utterly believable world of magic and it’s one we want to immerse ourselves completely in. More adventures to the Archipelago please, I can’t wait💫#impossiblecreatures #booksaremagic #magicaladventures #magicalbeasts #brilliantbooks #getlostinabook #readitnow #thebestchildrensauthor #thebestchildrensbooks #dianawynnejones @katherine.rundell #magic ... ✨ Introducing Octavia Recommends! ✨
📚 As book lovers, we know that it can be daunting to choose what to read next. That’s why we’ve teamed up with Octavia, of Octavia's Bookshop in Cirencester, to bring you regular recommendations of new and exciting children’s books.
💜 Although our main focus as an organisation is helping children learn to read well, we also want to encourage a love for reading - and we know a great book can do just that! If you enjoy reading yourself, you're more likely to pass on that joy to others, whether that be as a Read With Me volunteer, a parent, a teacher or a child.
🍂 For her first instalment, Octavia recommends the very aptly titled October, October by Katya Balen. Take a look below to see why she recommends it for children aged eight all the way to grownups!
Have you read October, October? Or, do you have a favourite book for Autumn? Let us know in the comments below!👇 ... See MoreSee Less
